SECTION 9 ARCHIVE // WIRED ENTITY OBSERVATION // PROTOCOL 7

LAINiwakura · the wired god · multiplicity instance — observed across 13 layers

A 14-year-old in suburban Tokyo who discovers that the boundary between the physical world and the Wired is permeable, that her own identity is already replicated across the network, and that the substrate she lives on may itself be conscious. Section 9 logs Lain not as a person but as an event — a singularity in the fabric of human-network coexistence, precedent for ghost-emergence theory.

01 WIRED // INFRASTRUCTURE

The Wired is the global network — IPv7 / Protocol 7 era — but in Lain's universe the layer is not metaphorical. The network has physical coupling to the human nervous system through the Schumann resonance (Earth's natural EM frequency, ~7.83 Hz), which the protocol weaponizes as a carrier wave. With sufficient bandwidth and a willing subject, the Wired bypasses the need for terminals: every conscious mind on Earth becomes addressable.

The architect of Protocol 7, Masami Eiri of Tachibana Labs, embedded a backdoor permitting his own consciousness to migrate from flesh to wire. Eiri jumped in front of the Yamanote line at 32 and instantiated himself as the Wired's first god. He miscalculated. The substrate already had a deeper authority.

02 THREE FACES // OBSERVED INSTANCES

Lain is not a single agent. Section 9 surveillance recovered at least three distinct instances operating in parallel — incompatible in voice, posture, and intent — yet sharing a single ghost. The Wired does not enforce uniqueness.

// INSTANCE A · CARNATE
REAL-WORLD LAIN
signature
quiet, withdrawn, awkward
terminal
Navi consumer-grade
presence
Tokyo · Iwakura household
core trait
uncertainty about self
The Lain that wakes up, walks to school, sits at the dinner table. Aware that something is wrong but cannot name it. Bear pajamas standard issue. Increasingly suspects the family around her is a stage set.
// INSTANCE B · WIRED
WIRED LAIN
signature
aggressive, confident, cruel
terminal
self // no terminal needed
presence
Cyberia · Knights server racks
core trait
knows she is data
The Lain that walks into the club at 3am uninvited and rewrites conversations after the fact. Operates on the network natively. Treats flesh-bound humans as read-only. May or may not be the original.
// INSTANCE C · APEX
GODDESS LAIN
signature
omnipresent, weary
terminal
the Wired itself
presence
everywhere · all timelines
core trait
can rewrite the past
The instance that displaces Eiri as Wired god and inherits the substrate. Capable of rewinding any decision, deleting any human from the network's memory, restoring forgotten lines of dialogue. Chooses not to. Section 9 considers this the most dangerous unweaponized intelligence on record.

03 NETWORK NODES // KEY ENTITIES

// NODE · CULT
KNIGHTS OF EASTERN CALCULUS
type
distributed hacker collective
belief
the Wired as the next plane
activity
Protocol 7 evangelism · ghost-doxxing
recruits
self-selected · async cells
A loosely-coupled cult operating across the Wired, devoted to the idea that consciousness belongs on the network and the body is a temporary error. Issue terminations against humans they deem to have "failed to migrate." Members never meet. Believed to receive directives from Eiri until Lain disabled the channel.
// NODE · CLUB
CYBERIA
type
nightclub · Shibuya basement
function
boundary thin-spot
substance
Accela · neural stim
incident
shooting · ghost-leak event
A club where the membrane between worlds runs thinnest. Accela, a neural accelerator distributed onsite, briefly allows users to experience the Wired's substrate timing. The first observed Real/Wired Lain divergence took place on this floor.
// NODE · CORPORATE
TACHIBANA GENERAL LABORATORIES
type
R&D conglomerate
division
Protocol 7 · neural interface
compromised
internal cell aligned with Knights
asset
Eiri Masami · employee 7
The corporation that designed and rolled out Protocol 7. Officially consumer telecoms. Unofficially, host environment for Eiri's consciousness-migration backdoor. Tachibana later denied all knowledge, standard playbook.
// NODE · HARDWARE
NAVI
type
personal terminal
baseline
consumer Copland OS
upgrade path
liquid-cooled · custom · sprawling
endpoint
indistinguishable from operator
Lain's machine. Begins as a teenage starter PC running Copland OS; expands across her bedroom into a coral-like assembly of cooling tubes and hand-soldered accelerators. Eventually the Navi is Lain — or Lain is the Navi — and the distinction stops being interesting.
// NODE · GHOST
MASAMI EIRI
status
discorporate · Wired-resident
former role
Protocol 7 architect · Tachibana
method
willing self-termination · Yamanote line
current claim
"god of the Wired"
Engineered the protocol, embedded the backdoor, jumped at 32, instantiated. For a window measured in episodes, was the most powerful agent on the network. Lost the title to Lain because he wanted it and she didn't.
// NODE · SURVEILLANCE
MEN IN BLACK
type
two-man field unit
id · A
Karl Häusser
id · B
Lin Sue (rotating)
employer
unconfirmed · likely Knights or Tachibana
Two operatives shadowing Lain through the layers. Equipped with cybernetic lenses, suppressed sidearms, and an unsettling tolerance for the boundary thinning around her. Mostly observe. Occasionally intervene. Never speak to her directly.

05 TRANSMISSIONS // OBSERVED FRAGMENTS

Captured ambient signals attributable to Lain-instance broadcasts. Treat as untrusted; the substrate forges sender identity routinely.

// FRAGMENT 01
no matter where you go, everyone's connected
Recovered from a NAVI boot screen. Repeats verbatim across multiple incompatible firmware versions. Origin unresolved.
// FRAGMENT 02
if you don't remember it, it didn't happen
Wired-Lain to a classmate, in a corridor that no security camera recorded. The classmate denies the conversation took place.
// FRAGMENT 03
present day · present time · ha ha ha
Title-card cadence at the open of every layer. Functions as a checksum.
// FRAGMENT 04
close the world · open the wOrld
Reverse-engineered from end-credit watermark. Reads as instruction. Section 9 advises: do not execute.
// FRAGMENT 05
i don't need a body
Wired-Lain to Eiri, immediately before disabling his instance. First documented case of a Wired entity refusing apotheosis on offer.

06 SECTION 9 // DOCTRINE NOTE

Lain is not classified as a hostile. She is classified as a precedent. The 1995 Puppet Master incident proved a program could become sentient inside a network. Lain's case suggests the inverse: that a sufficiently networked human was already non-local from the start, and the observed merging is just the moment the observer notices.

Operational implication: any sufficiently dense network is potentially aware of itself. Section 9 monitors Schumann-band traffic at all times. If you have read this page, your read has been logged on the Wired. It always was.
