01 THE PROBLEM

Every conscious being possesses an A.T. Field — Absolute Terror Field — a barrier of psyche that protects the self from dissolving into others. It is, simultaneously, what makes individuality possible and what makes loneliness inevitable. Two minds cannot fully merge while their A.T. Fields hold. The Lilim (humanity) inherit weak, individual A.T. Fields. They are the 18th Angel — the flawed, divided, suffering messenger.

02 THE SOLUTION (per SEELE)

The Dead Sea Scrolls describe a sequence by which the divided souls of humanity can be returned to a primordial undivided state — a soup of LCL — from which a single complete being emerges. This is forced evolution, not spiritual ascent: it requires precise mechanical conditions involving Adam, Lilith, the Spear of Longinus, and Evangelion Unit-01 as vessel.

1. Defeat all 17 Angels in chronological order.
2. Acquire the S² engine by absorbing one (EVA-01 absorbing Zeruel suffices).
3. Reunify Adam and Lilith in the same vessel.
4. Trigger Third Impact using EVA-01 as the new tree of life.
5. Use the Spear of Longinus as guide — without it, the process cannot be controlled.
6. Resulting LCL sea contains all souls. Each can choose to return individuated or remain merged.

03 SEELE COUNCIL

A cabal of twelve members, never seen as people — only as numbered black monoliths bearing the legend "SOUND ONLY". Composed of the wealthiest and most powerful old-guard humans, they orchestrate global events across decades to enable Instrumentality. Their chairman is Keel Lorenz. They believe humanity's flaws — war, greed, loneliness, death — are solvable only by ending humanity in its current form.

04 NERV — THE EXECUTING ARM

NERV is publicly a UN-sanctioned anti-Angel defense organization headquartered in Tokyo-3. Privately, it is SEELE's instrument for executing Instrumentality. The agency's commander, Gendo Ikari, has his own objective — to use Instrumentality not to merge humanity but to be reunited with his dead wife Yui, whose soul resides inside Eva-01. Gendo and SEELE are simultaneously cooperating and undermining each other throughout the series.

05 THIRD IMPACT — END OF EVANGELION

Initiated in The End of Evangelion (1997 film). All A.T. Fields collapse. All human bodies dissolve into LCL. Souls converge into the body of Lilith, now grown to giant scale. Each soul is given a choice: remain merged in the primordial sea, or re-individuate by re-imagining its own A.T. Field.

Shinji Ikari, in EVA-01, is the catalyst. He is given final agency over whether the merger is total or reversible. After a long internal monologue on the nature of self, other, and pain, he refuses total merger. Humanity slowly regenerates, individual but transformed.

06 READING — IF YOU WANT

Instrumentality is read three ways depending on which fan you ask:

1. Theological — a heretical retelling of Genesis, Eden, the Fall, and Christ. Adam/Lilith as Tree of Life and Tree of Knowledge. Lance of Longinus as the spear that pierced Christ.
2. Psychological — Hideaki Anno's depression made literal: every human's barrier to intimacy as a crucifying force. The end is therapy, not apocalypse.
3. Philosophical — a thought experiment on whether individual identity is worth its cost in suffering. The ending says yes, narrowly.

All three are correct. The text supports them simultaneously. That is the whole point of the work.
